For Gilbert Simondon, concretization is the process by which a technical object’s parts come to depend on and support one another, until the machine becomes a coherent, self-regulating whole. Concretized machines are more reliable and easier to use, and harder to understand from the outside. Computer scientists would call the analogous process abstraction, and use “concretization” for its opposite.
